11 Unit Town House Development, Tower St, Heywood
Status: Out To Tender
Work Stages: RIBA 1-3 Role: Architect Planner: Caroline Tamworth |
Planning permission was granted for a development of 11No. three/four-bedroom family dwellings with off-road parking on the site of a former public house on Tower Street, Heywood. The approach has been to respond to the character of the surrounding area, addressing the form, scale and materials of the context.
The proposed layout of the site seeks to reinforce the urban fabric of the surrounding area by arranging the houses into 2 terraced rows parallel to Brunswick Street and perpendicular to Tower Street. Both rows of housing are set forwards to the site boundary to allow for off-street parking to the rear with hard and soft landscaping in between. Within the proposed terraced row, the individual houses are grouped in pairs with projecting bays that relate to the style and character of the surrounding properties. Pitched dormers break the eaves line to create a varied roofscape and maintain the character of the area. The rear elevations are less formal in appearance and make use of their private aspect. Ground floor bi-folding doors connect the dwellings with the ground floor private amenity space. The elevations are composed from a limited palette of materials making reference to the existing housing context. The main material is red multi-brick with traditional grey roof slates. |
