Side 2 storey extension, 9 Oldham Road, Uppermill, Saddleworth
Progress: 2026 start date
Work Stages: RIBA 1 - 4 Role: Architect Planning Consultant: Caroline Tamworth |
Planning consent and building regulations approval obtained for a part single, part two storey, subterranean side extension to an existing semi-detached 3 bed property within the conservation area on Oldham Rd in Uppermill, to form a new dwelling entrance and car port at ground floor level with internal access leading down to an artists studio/workshop beneath.
The ground floor extension will be partially subterranean and will comprise a pitched roof and be clad in stone or grey standing seam metal sheeting with feature glazing wrapping over the eaves. The lower ground will be a mixture of stone to match the existing dwelling, grey metal cladding, glazing and a sedum roof with a rooflight. The existing car parking area will be increased in size and laid with stone flags which will extend to the north to serve the new entrance. The new stone steps to provide separate access to the garden will be installed to the south of the extension following the removal of a small section of stone wall to the Oldham Road frontage. The proposed extension has been carefully designed to complement the host dwelling with the use of contrasting but sympathetic design and materials to respect the established character and street scene. The scale and massing of the proposed extension, and the change in levels of the site, will ensure that the proposed development will not appear as an incongruous feature or appear as visually intrusive when viewed from the public domain. The design and materials of the hard landscaping and boundary treatments have been considered in detail to create a muted palette befitting of the edge of village location close to the canal and river and treed area to the south. |
