Caffè Grande Abaco, Uppermill, Saddleworth
Client: Java Bar Espresso
Role: Architect Work Stages: RIBA 1 - 4 Contractor: THWG Ltd Completion: Spring 2018 |
Planning approval and building regulations granted for the renovation of the first and second floor of Caffe Grande Abaco ( Java Bar Espresso ) formerly the office of Ski Miquel. Located on the High Street in Uppermill, the premises is a 4 storey Grade II Listed Building that provides a charming backdrop to the historic cobbled street of St Mary's Gate.
The design retains the old - worldly character of the building and indeed enhances its quaint features at first and second floor level to provide an additional bar area, seating space, kitchen facilities and toilets. The proposal sought to provide a more relaxed cafe experience to the upper floors over looking the main High Street through Uppermill. Navy timber wall cladding and veined marble contrasts aged tan leather upholstery and cast iron metal work to re-create the welcoming atmosphere that is already experienced by locals and tourists in the existing cafe below. Working closely with the client and contractor internal walls which divided the building were removed or glazed to create a lighter and brighter space, and false ceilings above staircases removed to maximise height and to create a more open feel. Elegant Art Deco design flavours from Europe merge seamlessly with a traditionally rustic English rural aesthetic providing a warm and uplifting oasis elevated above the hustle and bustle of the main road. The new space perfectly complements the existing premises and the fabulous deli style menu on offer. |
