Status: Tender Stage
Work Stages: RIBA 1 - 4 Role: Architect & Interior Designer Planning Consultant: Mark Jones |
Planning permission has been approved for the demolition of an existing dated and structurally unsafe property on Station Lane, Greenfield, and its replacement with a new modern two storey detached dwelling with associated landscaping. The clients brief was substantial with the proposed accommodation schedule to include a large open plan kitchen/dining space with high/ vaulted ceilings, a separate formal lounge and a snug, an additional boot room/cloakroom space, and 5 bedrooms with en-suites, all arranged around a bright and airy central atrium and staircase. Additionally the client’s requirements included a pool, sauna, gym, wine cellar and golf simulation room, plus an integrated 2 car garage.
In terms of architecture our design proposals sought to reduce the overall massing of the large schedule of accommodation by providing a central 2 storey stone element incorporating a centrally positioned entranceway, flanked by 2 single storey ‘wings’ sitting forward of the main 2 storey volume, creating an elegant private south facing forecourt to the property. The proposals positioned the open plan kitchen/dining space within the western single storey volume with full height vaulted ceilings within the pitched roof. To the eastern single storey volume the same spatial style was adopted housing the pool and sauna, with an additional basement in this location providing a gym, golf room, wine cellar and plant room. The materiality of the elevations is a tasteful combination of local stone and vertical dark timber cladding with natural slate roofs and detailing to reflect the local vernacular of the historic residential and agricultural buildings within the Saddleworth countryside. The introduction of glazing throughout has been designed with a contemporary style of architecture in mind, providing delicate glazed ‘links’ between the 3 volumes, a large double height glazed atrium to the front elevation where the central staircase is located, and a modern fully glazed corner to the main kitchen/dining space. |

Our interior design proposals have endeavoured to create modern relaxing spaces blending rustic warmth and simplicity with contemporary elegance and functionality. We have aimed for natural tranquillity but with a modern ‘edge’. Oak rafters in the vaulted ceiling of the open plan kitchen/dining space and again in the swimming pool area with exposed stone walls, honed stone tiled floors and oak lintels to doorways create a rich natural palette of materials and textures that complement the clean linear architecture and natural daylight levels of the property’s overall design. We propose beautiful aged brass detailing within the soft lighting and ironmongery to contrast against the thick stone walls and light weight black aluminium framed glazing. In the same way we have mixed muted upholstery tones, soft rugs and delicate potted plants with solid wooden tables, benches and heavy oak treads to the staircase, bringing warmth and texture to a clean and somewhat 'Nordic' aesthetic. The bedroom spaces reveal charcoal/navy accents and luxurious woods to create atmospheric yet relaxing spaces that are both stylish and calming. Whereas the basement area (wine cellar/gym/golf) provides stronger more contemporary lighting and design that is more functional and suited to entertainment.
