Our proposals were accepted to strip out and upgrade the outdated existing communal amenity spaces at ground and first floor level of a 1000+ bed halls of residence on Hathersage Road, to the south of the University of Manchester Campus. An area of approx 600sqm was reconfigured to provide vibrant and energetic social spaces that encourage student interaction and group study. The existing escalators which led to sterile rooms were removed and replaced with a new staircase with integrated amphitheatre that served to link the upper and lower floors. Polished concrete and red brick walls throughout provide a sophisticated environment for students whilst acknowledging Manchester's industrial heritage. Project undertaken whilst at 74 Architects.
